Regardless of groundhog status, it’s still winter for a few more weeks and it’s time to WIN it!
The time to get race fit and to train with purpose is now, but how on earth to get rolling in the cold, soggy days between sunny ones?
Here are a few tips for you as you battle through March and early April into your first race.
- Make promises. Promise yourself you will train and then do it. It’s not as simple as it sounds, but if you keep your promise, you strengthen your mental training ability. Get friends. Get a coach. Get a team of support if you need to help you keep your training promises.
- Be creative. Think big and have fun with it. Stage combination trainer and run workouts, get to yoga, go hiking with a weighted pack, etc. Plan good cross training and get moving. Intensity is fitness building in whatever form you elect. Ultimately, the rower or stair climber STILL beat the couch and a beer any day!
- Periodize your nutrition. It’s all math at the most fundamental level. Train less= eat less to minimize winter weight gain. Try a food journal. Try eating without distractions and slowing down. Plan one treat a day and stick to it.
- Learn. There is always time to learn more about skill development, sports performance, nutrition, season planning, physiology, functional strength, power-based training, and recovery practices (just a few examples). Increase your wisdom before you race this season and see how smart + training= better race results. If reading is a challenge, then listen to a webinar, attend a clinic, or hire a coach for an hour of rapid-fire Q&A. You are worth it.
